Talk is Cheap. Fiction is Free.

Audience Participation is Encouraged

Announcing "Project Alice"!

"Alice" is an online collaborative web-comic project. That means that all of the artwork for the project will be provided by audience members like you! I am looking for a wide diversity of artwork from multiple artists all coming together to create a unique web-comic experience.

Artwork of all kinds will be accepted, and the more unique and creative, the better! Traditional comic illustrations, digital art, photography, watercolors, flash animation, even sidewalk chalk art will be accepted. Read the script. Get inspired. Go wild!

Naturally some panels will be more popular than others. Because I want to receive artwork for every panel in each issue, my preference is for panels that currently have no artwork. However, if I receive multiple pieces of artwork for the same panel, I will set up the panel so that the reader can select which artwork they want to see displayed for that panel! Over time, it is my hope that every panel will have multiple submissions, so that the reader can customize the page according to their own tastes!

I will begin accepting artwork for individual panels as soon as the script goes up on the site.

October 5, 2008: I am currently accepting submissions for Alice #2 panels.

September 6, 2008: I am currently accepting submissions for Alice #1 panels.

What you need to know (please read it all!):

1. I can only accept electronic submissions at this time, as I do not have a physical address I want to post on the net. Send your completed panels as an email attachment to contribute@jsduke.com. Please submit only one panel per email.

2. All artwork submitted to the site for use in Project Alice must be made available under an "attribution, non-commercial, share-alike" creative commons license. This license allows me to use, modify, and distribute the images for use on the site, but allows the creator of the artwork to retain their copyright of the original image. For more information, see the creative commons website at creativecommons.org. The details of this specific license can be found here. All you need to do to satisfy this requirement is include the following statement in your email with your submission(s):

"This image is being made available for use in "Project Alice" under a "by-nc-sa" creative commons license."

3. I cannot pay you for your artwork. I wish I could, but even five dollars a panel would quickly add up to thousands of dollars. You will however keep your copyright of the original work under the terms of the creative commons license described above. In return for your contribution to "Project Alice", I will create a listing for you in the Contributors section of the website. In your listing, I will post the following information:

You may choose not to be listed in the Contributors section if you wish. Any information you want posted in your listing must be provided by you. I will not be posting any information unless you provide it for me with your consent.

4. I will not make unnecessary changes to your artwork. The only changes I will make are those modifications needed to fit the image onto the page, or to add the appropriate text for dialogue, footnotes, etc. Otherwise your artwork will appear on the site in the same form in which you submitted it. In the Contributors section, I will post thumbnails of all the artwork accepted for Project Alice that will open onto the original, unmodified, full-size high-resolution image.

5. Because "Alice" is made available under an attribute, non-commercial, share-alike creative commons license, the script may be reposted on other websites, in part or in whole, under the terms of the cc license. If you are an ambitious artist with a website of your own, you may wish to publish "Alice" on your website with all of your own original artwork. If you should choose to do so, you have my full support! Just please let me know so that I can enjoy your version of the project as well!

6. Identify the panel for which you are submitting artwork in the title line of your email. The preferred format is this: Issue#/Page#/Panel letter. So 1/12/b would indicate Issue #1, Page 12, Panel B.

7. You do not need to place the character dialogue, footnotes, or any other text from the panel in the artwork you submit. I can do that and am happy to do so. You may certainly do so if you wish, provided you do not change the content of the text. If you do not include the panel text, please keep it in mind while creating your submission, and leave plenty of room for it to be added when I get it.

8.Any questions, comments, concerns, or suggestions may be directed to feedback@jsduke.com.
